What Is Armageddon

Really About?

by Craige McMillan
Many internet sources portray Armageddon as the great battle to destroy evil in the world. But is that really its purpose?

As I've watched the news and the advancement of technology during my lifetime, I'm not sure the traditional explanations about Armageddon are correct.

Besides, in an age where "my truth" and "your truth" must coexist, because there is no real truth, what is evil? How does evil fit into the picture?

Armageddon isn't about good and evil.

Armageddon is really about power. Who controls the world's governments? Who rules humanity? Is it God? Satan? Or man?

Satan made his bid for ruler of the world sometime after creation. Eve, the apple and all that. He was pretty successful. Whereas mankind had communed directly with the Creator before Satan's intervention, that communication was inhibited when we sided with Satan against God.

As you may recall, Jesus did not dispute Satan's claim that the world belonged to him. Here's the account in The Message:

"For the third test, the Devil took him to the peak of a huge mountain. He gestured expansively, pointing out all the earth's kingdoms, how glorious they all were. Then he said, 'They're yours—lock, stock, and barrel. Just go down on your knees and worship me, and they're yours.'

"Jesus' refusal was curt: 'Beat it, Satan!' He backed his rebuke with a third quotation from Deuteronomy: 'Worship the Lord your God, and only him. Serve him with absolute single-heartedness'" Matthew 4:8-10 (MSG).

That's why I believe: It's about power.

Armageddon is a place, a time, and we have a roadmap

The roadmap appeared in Matthew 24. It was Jesus way of saying, "When you see this, this, and this, then expect to see that just around the corner." OK, fair enough. What should we see? How about:

• False Messiahs

• Wars, famines, earthquakes

• Growing persecution and hatred of both Christians and Jews

• Widespread hatred separating ordinary people from one another

• Wickedness (evil) will continually become worse

• Love will disappear

• The "abomination that causes desolation" will stand in the holy place

Is it starting to make sense?

Armageddon isn't about good and evil as we know them. It is about raw power. Who controls humanity out into the future? Is it the creator? Or the upstart?

The Bible gives us a time, a place, and it tells us that a confrontation is coming unlike any that the modern world has ever seen. It won't be soldier against soldier, tank against tank, or drone against drone.

No. It will be the world's armies united against the Creator! The natural world that we live in, pitted against the supernatural world from which we came. The war of Armageddon is not really a battle between good and evil (or God and Satan) as is popularly represented.

Armageddon is a war between the natural and supernatural worlds. And the natural world is at a distinct disadvantage. The natural world no longer believes the supernatural exists.
